In the Dover, Deal & District Bar
Billiards League, the Spring Cup is
under way, in which the top two of each
group eventually qualify for semi-final
knockouts. The singles are open rules,
but the doubles are played using a
triangle to rack the white balls behind
the 100 hole for each opening break,
resulting in low-scoring but often close
games.
In Group A
the Betteshanger A started in fine form
as they won away at the Brickmakers Arms
A 5-1. Craig Lancaster (990) put the
Brickies ahead, but Wack Sampson (2,230)
levelled, before Neville Potts (8,800)
put the visitors ahead thanks to an
impressive opening break of 5,560.
Betteshanger won all three doubles, to
secure the win, Potts & Saville high
scoring with 3,450.
The Royal Oak beat the Brickmakers Arms
B 5-1 in Nonington. Rick Cowdrey
(3,070) put the Brickies ahead, before
Oak successes for Steve Lake (2,180) and
Roger Oldfield (3, 250). Lake & Mark
Graves (1,760) followed by Graves &
Oldfield (1,990) secured the match, and
Nigel Scott & Graves took the final leg
2,150-1,690.
The Two Sawyers from Woolage Green won
4-2 away to the Market Inn B, Sandwich.
Gareth Butcher (4,300) put the Market in
front, before Sawyers victories for Gary
Clarke (3,000) and Alan Smith (4,050).
Butcher & Dave Carliell (1,650)
levelled, Smith & Richard Cousens edged
Carliell & Alan Farra 2,370-2,010, and
Clarke & Cousens (3,600) claimed the
match.
In Group B, the only match played
Tuesday saw the Betteshanger B draw 3-3
at home to the Market Inn A. Bill
Edwards (5,090) won after an opening
4,600 break, and Luke Smith (2,690)
extended Betteshanger’s lead, before
John Skinner (1,250) won for the
Sandwich side. Smith & Edwards (3,130)
took the first doubles, but Craig
Carlson & Skinner (1,770) won, before
Derek Latham & Carlson defeated Dave
Mackay & Smith 1,450-1,340 to force the
draw.
