The Summer
League is under way in the Dover, Deal & District Bar
Billiards League. The champions from 2 years ago, the
Market Inn, got off to a flying start with a 6-0 home win
against the Brickmakers Arms B. Derek Latham (5,450) won,
followed by a narrow 3,190-2,650 victory for Dave Carliell
against Dave Howarth. Gareth Butcher (3,840) wrapped up the
singles, then partnered Latham in the first doubles to a
5,600 score. Butcher & Craig Carlson defeated Warren
Cowdrey & Howarth 3,680-2,160 after Cowdrey had unluckily
lost a 2,000 break after exceeding the bust rule. Carliell
& Carlson (4,080) took the final leg, this time after Rick
Cowdrey had lost a 1,800 break.
The Magnet
A beat the Magnet B 5-1 to win their Deal pub derby. Mike
Callanan (3,270) put the A ahead, but Dawn Williams beat Lin
Callanan 1,280-1,110 to level the match. John Higgens
(2,480) re-established the lead for the A, and Lin Callanan
& Ward Griffiths defeated Donna Prior & Williams 1,510-980
in the first doubles. The final two doubles also went to
the A to wrap up the match, via Griffiths & Higgens (2,120)
and Mike Callanan & Griffiths (3,160).
The Plough
& Harrow B, Tilmanstone, beat the Brickmakers A 4-2 in
Deal. Gerald Gilbert edged Chris Gent 1,580-1,370 for the
Plough, before Paul Garlinge (2,800) levelled. Ken Keen
beat Ann Garlinge 2,490-2,090 to put the Plough back in
front, but Gent & Paul Garlinge (3,060) took the first
doubles to again restore equilibrium. Harry Pearson &
Gilbert (2,390) won, followed by a close 1,860-1,580 success
for Gilbert & Keen against Paul & Ann Garlinge to secure the
overall victory.
