The Chantry
Club won the Spring Cup competition this year with a victory
over Betteshanger Club 4-2 on an unusually tricky Plough &
Harrow, Bridge table. Wack Sampson (6,040) started well for the
Deal side when he defeated John Fullager, but Kevin Kay (6,870)
hit back immediately to level the scores. Chris Saville (1,990)
then put the Deal side ahead again after recovering from a black
peg in the dying moments of his game against Stan Brocklebank.
The doubles games all proved close affairs, with Fullager &
Brocklebank (1,940) levelling the match at 2-2 with a last ball
victory over Saville & Neville Potts, then Kay & Fullager
(2,350) edging past Sampson & Saville to put them ahead in the
match. This left a last game decider, with both teams needing a
win to secure the Cup win, and it was Brocklebank & Kay (2,160)
to hold their nerve and win the game.
The Plate
competition, between the two teams that finished bottom of their
groups, was won 4-2 by the Plough & Harrow A, against the Plough
& Harrow B in an all-Tilmanstone match. Ken Keen beat Brian
Carpenter 2,740-2,360 to put the B ahead, but wins for Ron Beer
(1,350) and Ann Keen (3,340) gained the lead for the A. The
first two doubles also went to the A, via Ann Keen & Carpenter
(1,600) and Beer & Ann Keen (2,450), to give the A the match,
while Ian Jamieson & Ken Keen (2,080) took the last leg for the
B.
