On the final
day of the group stage, Group A saw winners Betteshanger Alma
Lions relinquish their unbeaten record as they lost 4-2 away
to the Market Inn, Sandwich. Ted Hogben (3,760) and Derek
Latham (5,170) put the Market 2-0 up, before Chris Saville
(6,880) pulled a point back for Betteshanger. Neville Potts &
Wack Sampson edged John Skinner & Hogben 1,670-1,590 to level,
but Hogben & Latham (2,650) won thanks to a triangles-fettered
2,160 break from Latham, followed by success for Latham &
Skinner (1,920) for the match.
The
Greyhound finish third after defeating the Brickmakers B 4-2.
Dave Carliell (3,670) put the Greyhound ahead, before Dave
Howarth just beat Gareth Butcher 3,960-3,870, and Shirley
Cowdrey (1,820) also won to put the Brickies in front. All
the doubles went to the home side via Roger Beadle & Carliell
(1,730), Carliell & Butcher (1,880) and Butcher & Beadle
(1,230) to give them the match.
The Royal
Oak defeated the Plough & Harrow A, Tilmanstone 6-0. Gary
Clarke (4,570), Stuart Richardson (2,860) and Alan Smith
(6,800) gave them the perfect start, followed by a doubles win
for Clarke & Richard Cousens (1,530). Cousens & Richardson
then shaded Karen Keen & Ann Keen 1,460-1,390, and Smith &
Cousens (2,080) completed the evening.
In Group B,
the Chantry have finished top after a 4-2 win away to the
Plough & Harrow B, Tilmanstone. Kevin Kay (2,130), Stan
Brocklebank (3,350) and John Fullager (2,980) swept the
singles, with Brocklebank & Kay (1,760) taking the first
doubles and the match. Harry Pearson & Gerald Gilbert (1,790)
and Gilbert & Ken Keen (1,880) too the last two legs for the
Plough.
The
Fitzwalter Arms trounced the Magnet A 6-0 in Goodnestone.
Roger Oldfield (4,470), Mark Graves (2,460) and Steve Lake
(3,400) took the singles, and Oldfield & Nigel Scott edged
John Higgens & Lin Callanan 1,790-1,710 in the first doubles.
Scott & Graves (1,510) and Lake & Scott (1,510) completed the
rout.
The final of
the Spring Cup between the Betteshanger Alma Lions and the
Chantry will be held at the Plough & Harrow in Bridge on
Tuesday May 1st.
