The Spring Cup is
underway, featuring standard rules in singles, but all the opening
breaks in the doubles played placing the balls in a triangle behind
the 100 hole.
The Betteshanger
Lions started their defence of the competition with a 4-2 win at the
Royal Oak, Nonington. They rushed to 3-0 with victories for Wack
Sampson (2,140), Chris Saville (8,120) and Neville Potts (2,730). The
Oak hit back in the pairs with two wins, including Gary Clarke & Alan
Smith (2,340), but Saville & Potts (2,550) took the last leg.
The Plough & Harrow
A, Tilmanstone, won impressively 5-1 away to the Brickmakers B, Deal.
They took a 3-0 lead via Ann Keen (3,630), Brian Carpenter (2,170) and
Karen Keen (3,140), with Ann Keen & Carpenter (1,500) taking the first
doubles to secure the match. The Brickies point came courtesy of Rick
Cowdrey & Shirley Cowdrey (1,740).
An all-Sandwich
clash saw a 3-3 draw between the Greyhound and the Market Inn. Derek
Latham (5,550) and Craig Carlson (6,870) both won for the Market, Alan
Farra (5,780) won for the Greyhound. The Greyhound took the first two
doubles, including Dave Carliell & Christine Farra (2,260), Carliell
hitting a 1,570 break. Latham & Carlson (2,270) won the last leg for
the draw.
In Group B, the
Plough & Harrow, Bridge, beat the Fitzwalter Arms 4-2. Ian Dennett
(7,900) and Baz Symes (1,150) put the Plough ahead, Roger Oldfield
(4,670) hitting back for the Fitz. The first two doubles went to the
Plough, before a last leg in which Oldfield & Nigel Scott edged Keith
Symes & Dennett 1,870-1,860, despite Dennett hitting a 1,640 break.
The Plough & Harrow
B, Tilmanstone drew 3-3 with the Magnet A. The visitors raced to a
3-0 lead courtesy of John Higgens (1,470), Ward Griffiths (1,730) and
Mike Callanan (14,090), Callanan playing out the table. The doubles
saw victories for Gerald Gilbert & Phil Court (1,410), Court & Harry
Pearson (1,970) and Pearson & Gilbert (1,080).
