At the quarterfinal stage of the Spring Cup, the Alma Lions made
progress at the expense of the Magnet A after a 4-2 victory.
The opening singles was won by Mike Callanan (4,230) for the Magnet
side, but the
Alma
hit back with victories for Chris Saville (6,490) and Kevin Pringle
(3,620) to take a 2-1 lead. Pringle & Saville (1,910) then
combined to increase the lead before Saville & Wack Sampson
(2,500) scored well to secure the overall victory for the
Alma
side. The final doubles match saw John Higgens & Lin
Callanan win thanks mainly to an impressive 1,070 break by Higgens
in the difficult triangles format.
The
Royal Oak
also qualified after a 3-3 draw with the Market Inn from
Sandwich
, the result being decided on aggregate 19,070-16,090. Gary
Clarke beat Derek Latham 5,780-3,840 for the Nonington side, despite
Latham opening with a 3,100 break, and Alan Smith (6,070) extended
the
Royal Oak
lead. Craig Carlson
(5,100) gained a point back for the Market Inn after a 2,950 opening
break. Richard Cousens & Stuart Richardson (1,760) took
the first doubles for the Oak, leaving the Market Inn needing to
make up a 4,300 deficit in the last two triangles-format games to
have a chance. Latham & Carlson (2,170) won the first doubles
handsomely, but a 2,030-1,740 victory for Ted Hogben & Latham
against Clarke & Cousens proved in vain. Both Cousens and
Hogben recorded excellent 840 breaks during that leg.
The Plough & Harrow from Bridge also won, 5-1 against the
Brickmakers Arms B. Dave Howarth (2,640) gave the Brickies an
early lead, but Keith Symes (2,230) levelled the tie before Ian
Dennett beat Bill Edwards 3,430-2,760 to put the Plough in front.
Wins in the first two doubles courtesy of Keith Symes & Dennett
(1,780) and Dennett & Baz Symes (1,740) ensured the Plough's
qualification, and Baz Symes & Keith Symes edged Warren Cowdrey
and doubles partner Dawn 1,510-1,230 to also take the final game.
The
Plough & Harrow from Bridge travelled away to the Magnet A and
won 4-2, to help them finish in second.
All three singles went to the Plough, as Baz Symes (2,600)
was successful, Keith Symes defeated Mike Callanan 2,700-2,650, and
Ian Dennett (2,030) also overcame his opponent.
Ward Griffiths & John Higgens (1,540) gave a glimmer of
hope to the Magnet A, but any hope was extinguished as Dennett &
Baz Symes (2,130) secured the match victory.
Mike Callanan & Griffiths (1,750) took the final leg for
the Deal team.
