The conclusion of the group stage of the Spring Cup saw the Alma
Lions beat the Fitzwalter Arms 4-2 to finish undefeated, whereas the
Fitz edge into the fourth qualifying spot. Neville Potts
(5,080) opened with a win for the
Alma
, including a
3,050 break, Chris Saville (7,340) made it 2-0 courtesy of a 5,450
break, and Kevin Pringle beat Roger Oldfield 2,110-1,650 to complete
a clean-sweep of the singles.
Oldfield &
Steve
Lake
beat Saville
& Wack Sampson 1,440-1,240 in the first doubles, but the match
was decided in the next with a victory for Pringle & Saville
(2,240). Nigel Scott & Lake (2,140) took the final game
for the Fitz.
The
Royal Oak
and the Greyhound
played out a 3-3 draw, leaving the Oak in second place, and
condemning the Greyhound to the Plate competition. Gareth
Butcher just beat Alan Smith 2,080-1,930 after Butcher sank the
final ball down the 100 hole, Alan Farra (2,890) made it 2-0, and
Christine Farra (1,960) also won for a perfect start for the
visitors. The
Royal Oak
fought back in
the doubles, with wins for Richard Cousens & Gary Clarke (1,230)
and Clarke & Smith (2,140). In the final doubles, Clarke
sank the final ball down the 200 hole to enable he and Stuart
Richardson to edge Alan Farra & Butcher 2,060-1,990 and force
the draw.
In Group B, the Chantry confirmed their top-spot with a 6-0 win at
home to the Plough & Harrow A, Tilmanstone. Kevin Kay
(4,030), John Fullager (7,490) and Stan Brocklebank (4,710) were the
winners in the singles, and the doubles started with a narrow
1,990-1,650 victory for Kay & Fullager against Ann Keen &
Karen Keen. The match was completed with further Chantry
successes for Fullager & Brocklebank (2,920) and Brocklebank
& Kay (3,070).
The
Plough & Harrow from Bridge travelled away to the Magnet A and
won 4-2, to help them finish in second.
All three singles went to the Plough, as Baz Symes (2,600)
was successful, Keith Symes defeated Mike Callanan 2,700-2,650, and
Ian Dennett (2,030) also overcame his opponent.
Ward Griffiths & John Higgens (1,540) gave a glimmer of
hope to the Magnet A, but any hope was extinguished as Dennett &
Baz Symes (2,130) secured the match victory.
Mike Callanan & Griffiths (1,750) took the final leg for
the Deal team.
