Report 7th May  2006

Herewith the Dover, Deal & District Bar Billiards League report for this week:-

Tuesday 2nd May was finals night in the Dover, Deal & District Bar Billiards League with most of the trophies being contested.  The Open Pairs title was taken by Neville Potts & Chris Saville as they beat
Steve Lake & Roger Oldfield in two straight legs.  Potts & Saville scored 7,000 in the first leg, and a break of 4,000 in the second by Saville proved enough as they took the leg 6,000-2,000.  A new partnership, this was Potts’ third successive title having won in 2004, and Saville’s first Open Pairs title since 1993.

The Division One trophy went to Derek Latham as he beat Mike Callanan 2-1.  In some closely contested legs, Latham took the first 3,500-,2300, Callanan levelled with 5,900-3,500, and Latham responded to win the decider 4,360-3,220.

The Mixed Doubles final saw the same two players involved but the result reversed as Mike Callanan & Lin Callanan defeated Derek Latham & Sharon Green 2-1.  Latham & Green scored 4,300 to take the first leg, and were in a winning position in the second when misfortune caused the ball to roll off the D while Latham was cueing and resulted in a black peg.  Callanan & Callanan won the final leg 2,500-2,100 to take the title.

The Division Two final was played between Fitzwalter Arms team mates Mark Graves and Steve Lake , and saw Graves emerge victorious at 2-1.  Lake gained the first leg scoring 3,900, but Graves fought back in gritty fashion to take the next two legs 2,200-1,900 and 1,850-1,780.

In the Over 50s final, two players from the same team also joined battle as Baz Symes defeated Ian Dennett 2-0, both players from the Plough & Harrow, Bridge.  Baz Symes (1,800) took the first game, and a competitive second frame was also taken by Symes, 4,360-3,640.

The Ladies Doubles title went to Ann Keen & Karen Keen after they beat Lin Callanan & Gill Saville 2-1.  Keen & Keen took the first leg with 1,800, Callanan & Saville fought back to level with a 1,940-1,770 victory, but Keen & Keen closed out the match with a 3,310 score in the final game.

Roger Beadle beat John Judd in the Landlord’s Trophy, giving Beadle a hat-trick of successive titles.  John Judd edged the first game 760-660, but Beadle took the second 1,380-670.  Beadle carried that momentum through in the deciding leg to win with a score of 1,600.

Also played during the evening was the Challenge Cup Final, a five legged competition of three singles and two doubles.  Triangle-rules apply, and the highest aggregate score over the five legs decides the match.  The Plough & Harrow, Bridge team of Ian Dennett, Ann Keen, Baz Symes and Keith Symes beat the Magnet A by over 3,000 points, having built a large early lead that their rivals were unable to close.  The defeated Magnet A team consisted of Lin Callanan, Mike Callanan, Ward Griffiths and John Higgens.

In the Open Singles, Mike Callanan won the title for the fourth time, but had to fight back from behind to do so.  Alan Farra took the first game 3,800-1,400, but the second frame went to Callanan with a score of 6,500.  Callanan won the deciding frame with a 6,400 score, including a break of 4,450.  However, the vital break was not without a little fortune, as Callanan hit the black-peg on the way to the total, but the black stayed up and the title was his.

In the Ladies Singles, Lin Callanan beat seventeen-times champion Ann Keen in two straight legs, her second Ladies Singles title, this final being a repeat of her previous title from nineteen years ago.  Both legs were hard fought, with Callanan taking the first 1,740-1,250 and the second 1,870-900.

Kent Knockouts Day was played on Sunday 30th April at Betteshanger Bowling Club in Deal.  Players from the three Kent leagues contest various competitions, and the day saw mixed results for the local players.  The best success was for Craig Carlson & Derek Latham as they beat Gerry Goodwin & Gerry Fitzjohn from Medway to become Kent Open Pairs champions.  Both Carlson & Latham play for the Market Inn in Sandwich .

Latham also reached the final of the Alternative Rules competition, where he finished runner-up to Mark Foster from Medway in a repeat of the 2003 final.

First round losers contested Plates in all the competitions, and this saw further success for Dover & Deal as Chris Saville beat Jean Baker in the final of the Alternative Rules Plate 1,940-1,100.
