Finals Night Report  2005

Herewith the Dover, Deal & District Bar Billiards League report Finals Night 2005.

Last Tuesday was finals night in Dover, Deal & District bar billiards league, hosted by the Alma in Deal.  The Open Singles title was regained by Keith Symes, as he beat fellow Plough & Harrow Bridge player Ian Dennett.  Symes took the first leg 6500-2000, and opened the second leg with a break of 7560 to take back the trophy he first won two years ago.
The Open Pairs saw a victory for Gareth Butcher & Alan Farra from the Market Inn, Sandwich, as they beat the defending champions, Tim Hayes & Neville Potts of the Alma, in two straight legs.  The first leg was fairly close, with Farra hitting the important break, and in the second leg Butcher knocked a break of 5500 midway through.  Potts regained the break and was on almost 4000 when the bar dropped to hand victory to the Sandwich players.
Alan Farra also enjoyed success in the Over 50s competition, as he defeated Alan Smith from the Royal Oak, Nonington.  Farra won the first leg 4700-3400, and an opening break in the second leg of 5600 proved enough, his final score 8200.
The Division One singles title was the second of two individual titles for Keith Symes, as he beat Tim Hayes of the Alma 2-0.  Symes snatched the opening frame with a late 3500 break having trailed throughout, and opened the second game with a 7000 break to leave his opponent too much to do.
The Market Inn picked up their third trophy of the night, as Derek Latham beat Daniel Jackson of the Greyhound, Sandwich 2-0 to take the Division Two singles.  Latham edged a close first frame, but a 7200 break in the second sealed victory.
Ann Garlinge, from the Brickmakers Arms in Deal, won the Ladies Singles, beating 15 times champion Ann Keen from the Plough & Harrow, Tilmanstone.  Both frames were close, with Garlinge edging them both to claim the title for the first time.
Ann Keen enjoyed better fortunes as she partnered Tanya Philpott in the Ladies Doubles, as they defeated Lin Callanan & Gill Saville 2-1.  Keen & Philpott took the first frame, Callanan & Saville levelled, and Keen & Philpott took a nervy final leg for the trophy.
Lin Callanan & Mike Callanan of the Magnet defended their title as they beat Daniel Jackson & Bev Holness of the Greyhound 2-0 in the Mixed Pairs final.  The first leg was close, but in the second Mike Callanan opened with 6000 to put the match beyond their opponents.
Roger Beadle of the Greyhound won a closely contested Landlords Trophy, as he beat John Judd from the Magnet 2-1.  Judd took the first frame, but Beadle fought back to win the next two, needing the 100 hole in the second leg to stay in the match.
There was one team trophy being contested, the Steve Sampson Challenge Cup, played with triangles and aggregate scores.  The Plough & Harrow Bridge team of Ian Dennett, Ann Keen, Paddy Maher, Baz Symes and Keith Symes beat the Magnet A 10,280-7,400 in the final.

The Alma pub also hosted Kent Knockouts day last Sunday, which saw plenty of local success.  The Alternate rules singles was won by Kevin Pringle against Alan Farra, Mike Callanan & Chris Saville won the Kent Pairs, and the Over 50s was also won by Mike Callanan.  The Plate competitions, for first round losers of the main competitions, saw further successes.  Craig Carlson beat Derek Latham in the Alternate Rules Plate final, Rick Cowdrey & Paul Garlinge were runners-up in the Kent Pairs Plate, and Ann Keen defeated Kevin Pringle in the Over 50s Plate.
