Billiards League report for this
week: -
Last Tuesday was bar billiards
finals night, held at the
Alma
in Deal.
Mike Callanan, who plays
for the Magnet in Deal, is the
new Open Singles champion after
beating Tim Hayes 2-1 in the
final, the third time Callanan
has won the title. With
the final going to the third
deciding frame, Hayes took an
early lead with a 3900 break,
but Callanan got the break back
and went on the exceed that
total to claim the title.
Mike Callanan also took the
Division One singles title,
beating Baz Symes, from the
Plough
& Harrow
Bridge
,
2-1. Callanan took the
first frame, Symes fought back
to win the second, and the
Callanan only pulled clear
towards the end of the third for
victory.
The Division Two champion is
Daniel Jackson, from the
Greyhound in
Sandwich
,
who defeated Dave Howarth 2-0.
Howarth, who plays for the
Alma
,
had started well in the first,
to be overtaken by
Jackson
,
but accidentally defaulted on a
rule when in sight of
Jackson
's
score at the end of the second
to leave his opponent clear.
There was further success for
the Greyhound, with Roger Beadle
picking up the Landlord's Cup.
The Ladies Singles went to Ann
Keen, as she beat Tanya Philpott
2-0 in that final, Keen plays
for the Plough & Harrow
Tilmanstone, and Philpott for
the Magnet. Ann Keen was
unable to repeat that success as
she and Karen Keen were defeated
in a nail biter, 2-1 by Gill
Saville & Lin Callanan, the
victors needed to pot the final
ball down the 200 in the final
frame to win, and duly did so.
The Over 50s title was
successfully defended by Ian
Dennett, from the
Plough
& Harrow
Bridge
,
as he beat challenger Bill
Edwards 2-1 in the final.
The mixed pairs final saw Mike
Callanan & Lin Callanan
defeat Tanya Philpott &
Steve Philpott 2-0, a highly
satisfactory evening for Mike
Callanan as he picked up a
hat-trick of trophies.
The final competition completed
was the mens pairs, which saw
drama as Neville Potts & Tim
Hayes got the better of Chris
Saville & Dave Howarth in an
all-Alma affair. With the
final going to the deciding
third frame, Saville gave his
side an early lead, but this was
later eroded by a steady break
from Potts. The match
eventually went to the wire,
with both teams needing to pot
the final ball down the 100 hole
to win.
After all players missed
their attempts, Potts succeeded
to finish an entertaining final
with all players contributing to
the game.
The Challenge Cup was won by the
Fitzwalter Arms from Goodnestone,
as they beat the Alma B in the
all-triangles format game.
Mark Graves played impressively
in the first leg to give the
Fitz an early lead, which the
Alma
were never able to close the gap
throughout the final four
narrowly contested legs.
The Fitz team of
Graves
,
Steve
Lake
,
Lisa Goddard, Carl Byford and
Roger Oldfield eventually won
