The Plough & Harrow from Bridge booked their semi-final spot with a 4-2 win against the
Market Inn B on a challenging Royal Oak table.  Baz Symes beat Derek Latham 1690-1400, and Ian Dennett (2060) also won for the Plough, before Craig Carlson (2520) pulled a point back for the Market Inn.  John Skinner & Ted Hogben beat Keith Symes & Baz Symes 910-900, Hogben sinking the last ball down the 200 hole.  With the match all square, the Plough took control of the final two doubles, Dennett & Keith Symes high-scoring with 2320.
The Alma Lions won their local battle against the Alma B 4-2, and will play the Plough in the semis.  Chris Saville won the first leg with a 15780 opening break, and Ted Batchelor sank the last ball to defeat John Mitchell 5420-5330 to put the Lions 2-0 up.  Tim Hayes (8580) wrapped up the singles, and the match was over after the first doubles as Saville & Wack Sampson were successful.  The Alma B points came in the last two doubles, as Paul Callanan played and won both, partnering Mitchell & Dave Howarth.
The
Market Inn A beat the Royal Oak 4-2, to carry forward the hopes of Sandwich .  Alan Farra (4170) and Gareth Butcher (3580) both won, before Gary Clarke (8710) pulled a point back for the Oak.  Drama in the doubles as Alan Farra & Christine Farra beat Stuart Richardson & Richard Cousens 1010-990, Christine Farra potting the last ball down the 200 to win.  The next doubles also went to the Market Inn, before Richard Cousens finished with the 100 hole as he and Alan Smith won their frame 1470-1450.  With the Royal Oak out-scoring the Market Inn A on points, Christine Farra proved the match-winner with the 200 in the first doubles.
The Chantry defeated the Magnet A 5-1 to progress.  Kevin Kay (3940) won, followed by a 3620-3240 victory for John Fullager against John Higgens.  Mike Callanan (3800) took the final singles for the Magnet.  All three doubles went to the Chantry to seal their semi-final place, the closest an 1830-1420 win for Kay & Fullager over Mike & Lin Callanan.

In the Plate, the Plough & Harrow from Tilmanstone defeated the Greyhound from
Sandwich 4-2.  The Greyhound were 2-1 up after the singles, with wins for Daniel Jackson (4120) and Dave McNeily (2210), with Ann Keen (2540) winning the Plough's point.  Karen Keen partnered Brian Carpenter and Ann Keen to win the first two doubles, leaving the Plough leading 3-2, but trailing on aggregate score.  The crucial last frame went to the wire as Ann Keen potted the last ball down the 200 as she & Carpenter beat McNeily & Jackson 1730-1640.

In the other Plate matches, the Brickmakers A beat the Magnet B 4-2 to qualify, and the Brickmakers B eliminated defending Plate champions the Butchers Arms, but further details are unknown at time of writing.  The Fitzwalter Arms received a bye to the semifinals.

 

Anyone interested are invited to a bar billiards open day at the Alma, Deal on Thursday May 6th.  There will be 6 competition tables to practice on, and league players will be on hand to coach, teach the basics of the game, and of course accept any challengers.
