With the Chantry not playing this week, the
Royal Oak took the opportunity to close within a point in Group A, in beating the Brickmakers B 4-2 away.  Simon Jones (4650) put the Deal side ahead, but Alan Smith (7390) levelled matters, followed by a close 2370-1840 win for Gary Clarke against Nick Corck.  Richard Cousens played all three doubles, and won the first two with first Clarke and then Smith to ensure the Royal Oak secured the match victory.  The second point for the Brickies came in the final leg as Jones & Corck edged their opponents 1640-1540.

The Alma Lions beat the Market Inn B away 4-2 to extend their lead in Group B.  The three singles went to the Alma with wins for Neville Potts (2860), Chris Saville (6950) and Tim Hayes (2860).  Craig Carlson & Ted Hogben just beat Saville & Terry Laslett 1840-1620, followed by a win for John Skinner & Carlson, against Laslett & Potts after Laslett black-pegged after needing the 200 to win.  With the match poised at 2-3, Hogben & Skinner were leading by 1000 approaching the bar, when Wack Sampson knocked a superb 1000 break to snatch victory for him and Hayes, and the bonus points.

The Butchers Arms beat the Magnet B 4-2 to maintain hope of landing second or third spot.  Chris Gent (2030) put the Magnet in front, but Paul Collins made it 1-1 after his luckless opponent, Tanya Philpott, black-pegged twice.  Phil Court (3020) put the Butchers Arms in the lead in the final singles, but an 870-750 win for Chris Gent & Tanya Philpott against Paul Collins & Daryl Pemble again pulled the match level.  Doug Vickers & Paul Collins scored 2680 to regain the lead for the Butchers Arms, and the final leg was won by Court & Pemble, 1660-1260 against Steve Philpott & Gent.

Elsewhere, the Fitzwalter Arms pulled off a superb win in the Challenge Cup against a combined Chantry/Plough & Harrow Bridge side.  The Challenge Cup is played with triangles throughout, and is decided on aggregate scores.  Kevin Kay beat Roger Oldfield 1570-1140 to give the Chantry a narrow lead, but Mark Graves edged the Fitz ahead in beating Keith Symes 2090-670.  Mick Nichol defeated Steve Lake 1460-1030 to reduce the deficit to 500 points in the final singles.  The mixed doubles saw Steve Lake & Lisa Goddard out score Viv Wright & John Fullager by 130 points, and the other doubles ensured the Fitz victory as Mark Graves & Carl Byford scored 1550 to Baz Symes & Ian Dennett on 1460.  The Fitz join the Market Inn B and the Magnet B in the semi-final, the other tie still to be decided.
