The Spring Cup is under way, featuring three singles games, plus three doubles in which all breaks are taken with the balls racked with a triangle.
In Group A, the
Royal Oak are off to a flier after a 6-0 win at home to the Brickmakers A.  Gary Clarke (6210), Stuart Richardson (2550) and Alan Smith (5050) captured the singles for the Oak, and their success continued unabated in the doubles, the closest leg being a 1600-1140 win for Smith & Richard Cousens against Craig Lancaster & Ann Garlinge.
League champions the Chantry Club also made an impressive start, 4-2 winners away to the Brickmakers B.  Mick Nichol (4720) gave the Chantry the lead, before a superb frame was won by the Brickies as Simon Jones bested Kevin Kay 5190-4730.  John Fullager (3230) restored the Chantry lead, but the first doubles saw the Brickies again level as Simon Hart &
Nick Corck were victorious.  After the Chantry picked up the fifth leg, the vital final game went to the wire as Nichol & Kay emerged 2280-1890 winners over Simon Jones & Paul Dargan.

In Group B, the new Alma Lions team overcame a tricky table and tenacious opponents to record a big 6-0 win away to the Magnet B.  The singles all went to the
Alma , with wins for Neville Potts (5450), Tim Hayes (4270) and Chris Saville (3430).  Despite winning all three
doubles, Wack Sampson playing in all, each game was only won near the finish with important breaks from the visitors.  The closest was a 1570-1470 win for Potts & Sampson against Steve & Tanya Philpott, the winners only snatching victory at the end having trailed throughout.
The Fitzwalter Arms beat the Butchers Arms 5-1 away in Ashley.
Steve Lake (3160) took the first leg, Roger Oldfield beat Doug Vickers 4630-3280, and Mark Graves edged Ruth Collins 2420-2050 for 3-0 to the Fitz.  Carl Byford & Steve Lake extended the Fitz lead, before the
Butchers Arms point came courtesy of Doug Vickers & Darryl Pemble, with the Fitz winning the final match.

Group C saw the Plough & Harrow earn a decent 5-1 win away to the
Market Inn A.   Keith Symes beat Gareth Butcher 4010-3370, Ian Dennett edged Alan Farra 3040-2550 and Baz Symes scored 4500 to put the Plough 3-0 up.  Dave Carliell & Alan Farra narrowly beat the Symes combination 2170-2020 for the Market Inn's point, and were unlucky not to pick up a second frame after Christine Farra back-pegged on the final ball needing the 200 to win in the second doubles.

The Alma Gills opened their campaign with a 5-1 win at home to the Plough & Harrow from Tilmanstone.  Ann Keen just beat Shirley Cowdrey 2260-1630 after a good performance from her opponent, but that was to be the Plough’s only point.  Bill Edwards (1980) and Rick Cowdrey (2990) took both singles for the Alma, Dave Howarth & John Mitchell edged Ann Keen & Brian Carpenter 1540-1370, and the final two doubles also went to the Alma , with Harry Pearson playing particularly well.

finally Doug Vickers & Pemble salvaged the draw for the Butchers Arms.
