Report 5th July 2003

In Group A, the Plough & Harrow from Bridge travelled to Goodnestone and won 5-1 against the Fitzwalter Arms.  The first point went the way of the Fitz as Nigel Scott beat Baz Symes 2450-1820.  From there, though, the Plough took control as Keith Symes (5960) and Mark Maher (3580) took the next two singles, and the Plough took all three doubles.

In Group B, the first all-Sandwich
Derby for a few years took place at the Greyhound, where the visiting Market Inn team emerged 5-1 winners.  Alan Farra (2480) took the first leg, and Gareth Butcher scored 4180 on an extremely tricky table to put the Market Inn 2-0 up.  A comedy of errors in leg three was eventually resolved in the Market favour as Craig Carlson potted the final ball down the 100 hole to beat Daniel Jackson 1750-1670.  Dave Carliell & Alan Farra took the first doubles, but Ben Jordan & Dave McNeily enjoyed a good win in their doubles for a point to the Greyhound.  Butcher & Carliell for the Market Inn won the final doubles.
The other match in the group was a close contest, the Magnet A avenging their Spring Cup Plate final defeat as they just beat the Butchers Arms 4-2.  Doug Vickers had a good 2730-2150 win over Mike Callanan in the first leg, before Ward Griffiths (1220) levelled matters, and John Higgens just edged the frame 1540-1300 against Paul Collins.  Doug Vickers & Ruth Collins beat Ward Griffiths & Lin Callanan 1800-1580 to pull the match level again, but Mike & Lin Callanan (3020) restored the Magnet lead in the penultimate frame.  John Higgens & Lin Callanan had the better of the final leg as they defeated Paul & Ruth Collins 1970-1320 to take the match.

Group C saw another win for the Lion, this time 5-1 at home to the Magnet B.  Neville Potts (7980) and Tim Hayes (5230) won their singles legs convincingly, and Wack Sampson edged Steve Philpott 2410-1490 for maximum points from the singles.  The first doubles also went to the Lion, and the fifth was won 3270-1430 by Nev Potts & Matt Andrews against Tanya & Steve Philpott.  Potts was in inspired form, and during this leg completed his seventh maximum 2000 break of the evening.  In the final frame the Magnet at last picked up a point, as Steve Philpott & Rob Robertson won an excellent leg 4230-3160 against Sampson & Hayes.
Finally, the
Alma enjoyed their trip across Deal as they defeated the Brickmakers Arms A 4-2.  Bill Edwards (2680) took the first leg for the Alma , but Craig Lancaster (2190) levelled matters.  Harry Pearson (1570) restored the Alma lead in the final singles.  Pearson & Dave Howarth needed the last ball as they beat Alan Holmwood & Craig Lancaster by the margin of just 50 points in the first doubles, but Lancaster & Paul Garlinge rallied as they scored 3640 to give the Brickies hope of the draw.  Bill Edwards & Dave Howarth, however, won the final leg 2730-1960, for the match victory.
