Report 3rd August 2003

The Summer League has moved into the second group phase, and Group A saw a superb

4-2 win for the Market Inn against the previously rampant Lion from Ash.  Alan Farra (3400) gave the Sandwich side the lead, before Neville Potts beat Dave Carliell 2290-1600 to level matters.  Potts & Wack Sampson beat Craig Carlson & Gareth Butcher 6140-3800 to give the
Lion the lead, but Christine Farra & Alan Farra took a close leg 3140-2590 against Potts & Matt Andrews to make it 2-2.  Craig Carlson then beat Tim Hayes 5840-2410 in the final singles to give the Market Inn the lead, and a tense final doubles saw victory to Alan Farra &
Gareth Butcher against Hayes & Wack Sampson 5480-3080 to inflict the Lion's first Summer League defeat of the season.

The other Group A match saw the Plough & Harrow Bridge take maximum points in a 6-0 win at home to the Magnet B.  On a table on which the break altered and became extremely tricky as the evening progressed, the Plough still managed some decent scores.  Ian Dennett (4570), Baz Symes (3390) and Keith Symes (5190) mopped up the singles, and the match victory was captured with a 5680-2330 win for Keith Symes & Ian Dennett against Steve Philpott & Rob Robertson. The final two doubles also went convincingly to the Plough to secure the points.

The shock of the Summer League so far occurred in Group B where the Plough & Harrow from Tilmanstone won 4-2 away to the Magnet A.  Ward Griffiths beat Brian Carpenter 2190-1680 to put the Magnet in front, but Ann Keen (2780) levelled the tie before an excellent 4560-1860 win for Karen Keen against John Higgens.  A close first doubles was taken 1780-1550 by Karen Keen & Brian Carpenter, but that was followed by victory for John Higgens & Lin Callanan (3840) to give the Magnet hope of a draw.  A tense final leg was finally won 2460-1760 by Ann Keen & Karen Keen against Mike & Lin Callanan, as Karen finished with three wins from three games played.

The other match in the group saw a 3-3 draw between the Brickmakers B and the Alma .  Bill Edwards (2240) gave the Alma the lead, before Simon Jones (3670) took the second frame for the Brickies.  The final singles saw Harry Pearson (1760) restore the Alma lead.  Simon Jones & Simon Hart beat Edwards & Pearson 2530-1840, and that was followed by a win for Nick Corck & Simon Jones to give the Brickies the lead for the first time.  Harry Pearson & Dave Howarth (4650) rallied in the final leg to force the draw.

In the Plate competition, the Brickmakers A travelled to
Sandwich and beat the Greyhound

5-1 for a near perfect start.  All the singles fell the way of the Brickies as Paul Garlinge (1600), Craig Lancaster (1080) and Alan Holmwood (1760) all emerged victorious.  All the doubles were close, but the first two tumbled to the Deal team for a 5-0 lead as Ann Garlinge & Alan Holmwood beat Daniel Jackson & Dave McNeily 1280-820, and then Craig Lancaster & Ann Garlinge defeated Roger Beadle & Daniel Jackson 2370-1800.  The Greyhound at last took a deserved point as Jim Jackson & Daniel Jackson edged out Paul & Ann Garlinge 1500-1260.
