In Group A, The Lion from Ash visited
Sandwich
and came away
5-1 winners against the
Market
Inn
A.
The home
side's only joy came in a win for Alan Farra in the singles
against Tim Hayes, as Farra scored 9010. The other legs saw
singles wins for Paul Smart, Nev Potts (who narrowly defeated
Gareth Butcher 2760-2660), and all three doubles. Wack
Sampson, as ever, played and won all three of the latter frames.
The
Chantry from
Canterbury
managed to
close the gap at the top after a 6-0 win in Tilmanstone against
the Plough & Harrow. Between
John Fullager’s singles win there were two remarkably close legs
as Roger Standen just pipped Karen Keen 980-870, and Mick Nichol
edged out Ann Keen 730-680. All
three doubles went to the Chantry, as Kevin Kay featured in all,
including another close frame as Standen & Kay beat Ann Keen
& Brian Carpenter 3760-3530.
The
Royal Oak
are manoeuvring
well into the third qualification spot after a 6-0 trouncing of
rivals Magnet A. The
match saw singles wins for Alan Smith (3950) and Gary Clarke
(3980) before a close frame was taken by Stuart Richardson against
John Higgens 3270-3170. The
doubles continued in similar fashion as the
Royal Oak
swept up the
points on their own table.
In Group B, the Alma A enjoyed a good win, 5-1 at home to the
Brickmakers B. Ted
Batchelor (6930) took the first leg, but Simon Hart levelled the
tie in beating John Mitchell after Mitchell had sent the black peg
crashing approaching the end.
Chris Saville (5400) restored the
Alma
A lead, and a
close first doubles was taken by Batchelor & Rick Cowdrey
against Hart & Paul Garlinge 1790-1590.
The final two doubles fell to the
Alma
to ensure match
victory.
The
Fitzwalter Arms and the
Market
Inn
B
shared a 3-3
draw for the second time in the Spring Cup. Things started
well for the Fitz, though, as good wins for
Steve
Lake
and Mark Graves
established a 2-0 lead. Derek Latham pipped Roger Oldfield
2580-1740 to pull a point back
for the Market Inn, and Latham then partnered Craig Carlson to a
doubles win 2900-2300 against Oldfield and Nigel Scott.
Further success for the visitors in the next doubles for Latham
& Daniel
Jackson
seemed to point
to an excellent comeback for the
Sandwich
side, but Lake
& Scott fought well in the final leg to secure the draw.
Finally,
the Magnet B are challenging for a place in the top 4 after a 4-2
win at home to the Butchers Arms.
Doug Vickers beat Rob Robertson 1660-1380 to give the
Butchers the lead, but the Magnet fought back with singles
victories for Steve Philpott and Tanya Philpott.
A narrow win for Chris Gent & Tanya Philpott in the
first doubles gave the Magnet clear water, but Paul Collins &
Doug Vickers produced a 4430 score to give the visitors hope.
Gent & Steve Vickers grafted a final leg win to ensure
the bonus points for the Magnet
