Report 26th July 2003

The Plough & Harrow from Bridge visited the Plough & Harrow at Tilmanstone and won 5-1 in Group A.  Ian Dennett just beat Karen Keen 2440-2170, but Ann Keen equalised the match by winning an even closer leg, 2070-1820 against Paddy Maher.  Baz Symes (2900) restored the Plough Bridge lead in the final singles.  It was one-way traffic in the doubles as all three were won comfortably by the Plough Bridge team, including scores of 6020 for Dennett & Symes, and 6890 for Maher & Dennett.

The other match in Group A saw the Brickmakers B finish in second place after a 5-1 win against the Fitzwalter Arms, who will play in the Plate competition now.  Nick Corck gave the Brickies the early initiative, but Lee Byford won his leg to pull the match level.  Simon Jones (3770) won for the Brickies in the final singles.  The Brickies team took all three doubles, the crucial fifth leg being taken with a score of 2430 for Paul Dargan & Simon Jones.

The Magnet A beat the Market Inn 5-1 to leapfrog the Sandwich side and finish top of Group B.  Mike Callanan (4980) and John Higgens (5830) gave the Magnet a 2-0 lead, before Dave Carliell just defeated Ward Griffiths 1360-1310 to give the Market Inn hope.  Optimism was soon extinguished as the Magnet took three close doubles, including a 2150-1950 victory for Lin Callanan & Ward Griffiths against Alan Farra & Dave Carliell.

The other Group B fixture saw a 3-3 draw between the Greyhound and the Butchers Arms, a result which means both teams will play in the Plate for the remainder of the Summer League.  Jim Jackson (1870) took the first leg for the Greyhound, before Paul Collins (1650) levelled matters.  Daniel Jackson (3820) restored the lead for the Sandwich side in the final singles.  After Dave McNeily & Jim Jackson defeated Jan Kershaw & Doug Vickers 1360-1100, a match victory looked likely for the Greyhound.  Doug Vickers had other ideas, though, as he partnered first Paul Collins and then Ruth Collins to win the final two frames with scores of 4140 and 3770.

In Group C, the Lion finished the first phase with a commanding 6-0 win against the Alma .  The Ash side comfortably took the singles points as Wack Sampson (6000), Tim Hayes (4030) and Neville Potts (5780) all won.  After Potts & Matt Andrews beat Rick Cowdrey & Harry Pearson 4550-1130 in the first doubles, the match victory was secure, and the last two legs fell to complete the rout.

The final fixture saw the Magnet B book their place in the second phase of the main competition with a 4-2 win at Plate-bound Brickmakers A.  Rob Robertson (1840) gave the Magnet the lead, but Craig Lancaster (2470) made it 1-1.  The Magnet then raced to a 3-1 lead as Steve Philpott beat Ann Garlinge 2170-1670, before partnering Tanya Philpott to victory in the first doubles.  Alan Holmwood & Paul Garlinge gave the Brickies hope as they took the next leg, but on-form Steve Philpott won his third game of the night as he and Rob Robertson defeated Ann & Paul Garlinge 3460-2420.
