The Spring Cup has reached the semi-final stage, with all
matches played on neutral tables. In the main
competition the Lion defeated the Plough & Harrow from
Bridge on a tricky
Royal Oak
table, 5-1.
All three singles were taken by the Lion, as Wack Sampson, Tim
Hayes and Nev Potts all won. Potts win was 5290-2430
against Open Singles champion Keith Symes. After Paul
Smart & Nev Potts won their doubles the match was beyond
the Plough, but Keith Symes & Ian Dennett were still able
to rally for a 4690 score for a consolation point.
The Chantry are through to the final after beating the
Alma
A 4-2 at
the Lion. Kevin Kay beat Chris Saville 4740-2500, after
Sav had opened with an 1800 break and Symes a 4000 break.
John Fullager won a scrappy second singles with a late 1000
break, and the final singles was taken by John Mitchell to
finish the singles 2-1 to the Chantry. A superb doubles
was won 5800-4590 by Kevin Kay & John Fullager against
Chris Saville & Tim Bourner, and John Mitchell &
Saville gave the
Alma
hope with a
4940-3210 win against Roger Standen & Kay. With the
match at 3-2 to the Chantry but the
Alma
leading on
points aggregate, the final leg was winner-takes-all.
Tim Bourner and John Fullager both opened with maximum 2000
breaks, but Roger Standen only managed 700 giving the
initiative to the
Alma
. John
Mitchell, on 1870, unfortunately accidentally sunk both ball
and fell foul of the 2000 bust rule so
losing his break. From there Fullager managed another
2000 break and the match was effectively over.
The Plate competition saw the Magnet A beat the Plough &
Harrow from Tilmanstone 4-2 at the
Alma
to reach
the final. Karen Keen needed the last ball to beat Ward
Griffiths 1190-1180, the narrowest possible winning margin.
Mike Callanan (7620) pulled the match level, before John
Higgens just edged Ann Keen 2080-1740 to give the Magnet the
lead for the first time. After John Higgens & Lin
Callanan took the first doubles to give the Magnet a 3-1 lead
and a comfortable aggregate advantage, the Plough needed a
miracle. It was not to be, however, as a win for Karen
& Ann Keen in the fifth leg was to prove not enough as
Mike & Lin Callanan took the final frame and the match.
The Butchers Arms have booked their place in the final after
causing another shock by putting out the Magnet B 4-2, on the
Brickmakers table. Ruth
Collins took the first leg for the Butchers Arms, and Doug
Vickers extended their lead by winning a last-ball game
1170-1140 against Tanya Philpott.
The Magnet comeback was started as Steve Philpott took
the final singles, and then Chris Gent & Steve Philpott
won the first doubles. The
Magnet resistance was stopped in its tracks though, as Ruth
Collins & Janet Kershaw won a tense game against Steve
Philpott & Chris Gent, the margin of victory just 110
points. With
their lead restored, Doug Vickers & Janet Kershaw scored
2640 points in the final doubles to lead the Butchers Arms to
victory.
