Report 22nd Feb 2003

Herewith the Dover, Deal & District bar billiards league report for this week.  Also this week Kent Interleague matches were played - in the Ladies Interleague two teams from this area played two sides from Medway, one of ours finished runners-up.  Sorry, I can't remember the line-ups.

The A Interleague saw a Dover area east side, a Dover area west side, plus sides from Tunbridge Wells & Medway.  Our East team of Chris Saville, Tim Hayes, John Mitchell, Mike Callanan, Tim Bourner, Ted Batchelor, Neville Potts & Alan Smith won their competition, Saville & Hayes both winning all 6 of their matches.  If you want to cover this, pester Chris Saville (sav@barbilliardsdd.co.uk) for more details as he also has photographs of the victorious team.

In Group A, the Lion continued their superb form as they beat the
Royal Oak from Nonnington 5-1 in Ash.  Tim Hayes (7940) and Paul Smart (3550) both won their singles, but Neville Potts became only the second Lion player to lose a leg so far in the Spring Cup as he lost to Alan Smith.  Smith scored 5040 courtesy of a 4900 break.  Wack Sampson once again played and won all three doubles, including a close last leg as he and Tim Hayes beat Alan Smith & Gary Clarke 3690-3300.
The
Market Inn A had a tremendous result in beating the Chantry 4-2 at home in Sandwich .  Dave Carliell had to sink the last ball down the 100 to beat Roger Standen 1770-1710 to take the first leg for the Market, before a 5400 break for John Fullager as he beat Alan Farra 7440-3830.  The final singles was won by Gareth Butcher for the Sandwich side for a 2-1 lead.  The first doubles went to the Chantry as Kevin Kay & Mick Nichol won, before Alan Farra & Gareth Butcher restored the Market Inn lead.  In the final leg Christine Farra & Alan Farra beat John Fullager & Mick Nichol - the Chantry players had needed to finish with the 200 hole to win, but black pegged.
The Plough & Harrow and the Brickmakers A shared a 3-3 draw in Tilmanstone.  In a seesaw encounter, Karen Keen took the first leg for the Plough, followed by a win for Ann Garlinge for a 1-1 score.  Brain Carpenter took the final singles to restore the Plough lead.  In the first doubles Nick Corck & Paul Garlinge restored equilibrium, before Carpenter & Ann Keen took the fifth leg.

inevitably, the final frame went to the Brickies to force the draw as Ann Garlinge & Craig Lancaster won.
Honours were even as the Alma B and the Magnet A drew 3-3.  Bill Edwards gave the
Alma early advantage, but John Higgins notched 4180 to level matters.  A good win for Dave Howarth against Mike Callanan 2280-1840 restored the Alma lead.  The Magnet took the first two doubles as Lin Callanan teamed up with firstly Mike Callanan and then John Higgins for victories, but the Alma fought back in the final leg as Bill Edwards & Harry Pearson won to force the draw.

In Group B, the heavyweight tussle between the Plough & Harrow from Bridge and the Alma A saw the visiting
Alma team win 4-2.  In an excellent first leg, Keith Symes beat Chris Saville 6640-6540.  Symes had opened with a 4500 break, but Saville fought back and took the lead via two smaller breaks.  Symes was on the table when the bar dropped and was able to finish for the win.  John Mitchell (5620) equalised for the Alma , but Ian Dennett (8120) restored the Plough lead.  Ted Batchelor & Chris Saville beat Paddy Meher & Keith Symes 4660-3850 in the first doubles after all four opened with maximum 2k breaks.  The final doubles saw two convincing wins for the Alma players to take the 4-2 victory.
The Market Inn team went into their match with the Brickmakers B needing a win after two successive draws and gained it by the narrowest possible margin of 3 ½ to 2 ½.  Simon Jones (7630) took the first leg for the home side, the Brickies.  The Market Inn fought back through wins for Matt Newman (2630) and Craig Carlson (3910).  The first doubles went to Daniel Jackson & Derek Latham for the Market, before Paul Dargan & Simon Jones took the fifth frame to narrow the score to 3-2.  With the Market
requiring the final leg for victory, the Brickies players Simon Jones & Simon Hart took an early lead which was gradually whittled away by Matt Newman & Daniel Jackson for the Market Inn.  Finally, with one white ball remaining the Market Inn held a 200 point lead, and Simon Hart confidently stepped up to sink the ball down the 200 hole to draw the leg 2940-2940.
The Fitzwalter Arms have moved to the top after travelling to the Butchers Arms for a 5-1 win.  Singles wins for
Steve Lake , Roger
Oldfield and Mark Graves built an early lead, which was continued in the first doubles.  At 4-0, Paul Collins & Ruth Collins took a close leg as they beat Nigel Scott & Mark Graves 1210-1110 to ensure the Butchers Arms did not finish empty-handed.  Roger Oldfield & Nigel Scott, however, took the final frame for the 5-1 margin.
