Report 20th June 2003

The Summer League is now under way, and features a "champions league" style format, with three groups of four in the first phase.  The best eight placed teams after six rounds of matches qualify for two further groups in the second phase, and the remaining four teams playing in a group for the Plate.  Maximum 2000 breaks apply in all games.

In Group A, the Plough & Harrow from Tilmanstone made a good start with an away win in Goodnestone, 4-2 at the Fitzwalter Arms.  Nigel Scott (3470) gave the Fitz the lead, before Karen Keen fought back with a 2600-2040 win over
Steve Lake .  Ann Keen (2860) took the final singles and the lead for the Plough.  The first two doubles fell to the Plough to give the match to the visitors, but an excellent final leg was won 3660-2740 by Steve Lake & Carl Byford against Ann Keen & Karen Keen.

The Plough & Harrow from Bridge enjoyed a close 4-2 win at home to the Brickmakers B.  Ian Dennett (5980) took the first leg for the Plough, but Nick Corck (2390) and Baz Taylor (3380) won the next two singles to give the Brickies the lead.  Ian Dennett & Paddy Maher (5950) and then Baz Symes with Maher (5400) took the first two doubles to regain the lead for the Plough, before an excellent final leg was taken 4970-3480 by Dennett & Symes against Simon Jones & Nick Corck to settle matters.

In Group B, the Market Inn got off to a flying start with a 5-1 at Spring Plate winners the Butchers Arms.  There were singles wins for Gareth Butcher (3490), Craig Carlson (3730) and Alan Farra (4150) for the Sandwich side, but the Butchers Arms were unlucky not to pick up more points as all the doubles were close.  Both the first doubles went to the Market Inn, before Doug Vickers & Ruth Collins beat Alan Farra & Christine Farra 1930-1790 in the final leg for a deserved consolation point.
The Magnet A won 4-2 against an old pub returning with a new team, the Greyhound from
Sandwich .  An excellent first leg between the two captains was won 4760-4050 by Mike Callanan against Daniel Jackson.  John Higgens (2960) made it 2-0 to the Magnet, before Ben Jordan (1740) won to narrow the score.  In the first doubles Dave McNeily & Roger Beadle beat Lin Callanan & Ward Griffiths 1410-960 to pull the tie level at 2-2, but the Magnet managed to take the final two frames to grab the bonus points.

Group C saw the Lion roaring at the start of the season as they won 6-0 away to the Brickmakers A.  Wack Sampson (1770), Tim Hayes (2730) and Nev Potts (2140) took the singles, and the match was put beyond doubt as Nev Potts & Terry Laslett beat Alan Holmwood & Ann Garlinge 1990-1340.
