The Chantry beat the Alma B 4-2 to strengthen their position in
Group A. Harry
Pearson lost an opening break of 2600, and consequently the leg
as Kevin Kay's total score of 2520 grabbed the point. John
Fullager (7490) and Roger Standen (7450) wrapped up the singles
for the Chantry. Anne Cope & Dave Howarth beat Standen
& Kay 3930-3800 to take the first doubles, but Fullager and
Standen took the next doubles to secure the match win. A
second point came the
Alma
way with a
superb 4770-4220 win for Howarth & Bill Edwards.
A 5-1 win for the Lion against the Magnet A leaves the Magnet
team in a precarious position in fifth place. The match
was closer than the 5-1 score line suggests, as Wack Sampson
just beat Mike Callanan 3340-3300.
With Tim Hayes winning for the Lion and John Higgens for
the Magnet, the home side had a 2-1 lead. Hayes &
Sampson again just edged Mike & Lin Callanan 3260-3030 in
the first doubles, and match was wrapped up as Nev Potts &
Hayes won the next doubles.
The Plough & Harrow from Tilmanstone almost pulled off a
shock against the
Royal Oak
, but
eventually had to settle for a 3-3 draw. Singles wins for
Karen Keen and Ann Keen gave the Plough a 2-0 lead before Alan
Smith gained a frame for the Oak. Ann & Karen Keen
teamed up in the first doubles to extend their lead, before
Richard Cousens partnered first Smith and then Gary Clarke for
two late wins to secure the draw.
The
Market
Inn
B
enjoyed a 5-1
win on a challenging Butchers Arms table in a match that could
easily have been drawn. The visitors finished the singles
2-1 up after wins for Craig Carlson and Daniel Jackson, and Paul
Collins for the Butchers Arms. All three doubles went to
the Market Inn, but Derek Latham &
Jackson
needed the
last ball for their 1910-1690 victory against Collins & Doug
Vickers, and Jackson & Carlson also required the final ball
in the last leg against Baz Winter & Vickers for a 1410-1180
frame.
The Plough & Harrow from Bridge are now confident of second
spot after their 5-1 win against the Fitzwalter Arms.
Singles wins for Keith Symes (5510), Paddy Maher (3000) and Ian
Dennett (2930) were continued into the first doubles as Baz
& Keith Symes (4980) were victorious. The Fitz sole
point came in the next doubles as Roger Oldfield & Mark
Graves notched 3930 for their win.
The Alma A defeated rivals Plough & Harrow from Bridge 5-1,
and have now probably secured top spot in Group B. Singles
wins for Ted Batchelor
and Chris Saville (5690) gave the Alma an excellent start on
their home table. In the third leg, Keith Symes opened
with a 5300 break for the
Plough, before John Mitchell knocked a1800 break. Mitchell
got the break back again and played out the table for a
7060-5740 win to inflict
Symes first defeat of the season. The Plough's sole point
came in an exciting first doubles as Baz Symes & Paddy Maher
beat Mitchell &
Batchelor 5610-4800. The final two legs were both taken by
the Alma, each narrowly after being level with a couple of
minutes to go.
Mid-table Market Inn B beat the Brickmakers B 5-1 at home, and
should now qualify in the top four. Daniel Jackson (3920)
took the first leg,
and Craig Carlson was fortunate to win the next, after Paul
Dargan black-pegged while leading. Derek Latham took the
final singles, and
match-victory was assured as Latham & Jackson beat Simon
Jones & Paul Dargan 4040-2400. Jones partnered Simon
Hart to victory in the next
doubles for the only point of the night for the Brickies.
The final leg saw Jackson & Carlson score 4380 for a good
win on and an enjoyable
match for all.
The Butchers Arms travelled to Goodnestone an enjoyed an
excellent 3-3 draw against the Fitzwalter Arms. Roger
Oldfield just beat Doug Vickers
1470-1380 to take the first leg for the Fitz, but this was
equalised as Paul Collins edged out Steve Lake 1450-1390.
The Butchers took the lead
as Janet Kershaw outscored her opponent for a superb win.
Roger Oldfield & Mark Graves took the first doubles, but
once again the Butchers moved into the ascendancy as Paul
Collins & Daryl Pemble triumphed. Finally, though,
Nigel Scott & Mark Graves rallied to grab the draw and
ensure honours were even.
