Report 17th August 2003

The Plough & Harrow from Bridge have taken a commanding position in Group A after winning 4-2 at previous leaders the Market Inn.  Ian Dennett (3050), Keith Symes (5200) and Baz Symes (3040) swept maximum points from the singles to give the Plough a 3-0 lead.  The Market Inn fought back as Alan Farra & Gareth Butcher (5640) took the first doubles, and then Craig Carlson & Butcher won an edgy frame 4970-3750 against Ian Dennett & Baz Symes.  The winners of the final frame would finish the evening top of the group, and Keith Symes & Ian Dennett defeated Dave Carliell & Alan Farra 3650-2790 to do just that.
The Lion are a point behind in third place after a 5-1 win at home to the Magnet B.  Neville Potts (2780) took his singles, but performance of the week was from Tanya Philpott as she beat Tim Hayes 2820-1970 for the Magnet's point.  Wack Sampson just beat Steve Philpott
3730-3510 in the closest frame of the evening.  The doubles were all canters for the Lion as Sampson & Potts (6330), Potts & Matt Andrews (4870) and Hayes & Sampson all won.

The Alma are in a strong position now in Group C after winning 4-2 away to the Plough & Harrow from Tilmanstone, many of the frames as close as the final scoreline.  Bill Edwards potted the final ball to beat Karen Keen 1650-1520 to give the
Alma the lead, but Brian
Carpenter played well to beat John Mitchell 3420-2130 to level the tie.  Dave Howarth (3260) restored the
Alma lead in the final singles.  Bill Edwards & Paul Callanan beat Ann Keen & Karen Keen 2510-1470 to make it 3-1, but Karen Keen sunk the ball down the 100 as she and
Carpenter defeated Callanan & Howarth 2740-2670.  The decisive final frame was the closest of all as Mitchell & Callanan beat Carpenter & Ann Keen by the margin of just 30 points, 2380-2350, as Callanan potted the final ball down the 100 hole.

The Brickmakers B  maintained their challenge for top-spot after a 3-3 draw at the Magnet A.  The Magnet are still without a win in this group.  Mike Callanan (5370) took the first leg for the Magnet, but the Brickies fought back with singles wins for Simon Jones (3740-2260 against John Higgens) and Nick Corck (2480).  The first doubles saw the Magnet A draw level as Mike & Lin Callanan scored 2870 for their victory.  Simon Jones & Paul Dargan (3140) regained the lead for the Brickies, but in the final leg John Higgens & Lin Callanan beat Dargan & Corck 3510-1380 to force the draw.

In the Plate, the Fitzwalter Arms winning run faltered as they lost away to the Greyhound 4-2.  The Greyhound took an extremely competitive first singles as Daniel Jackson bested Nigel Scott 6360-3240.  Lee Byford (1850) levelled the tie, before Roger Beadle beat Carl Byford by the margin of just 20 points to restore the Greyhound lead.
Steve Lake & Lee Byford (2120) took the first double to again pull the match equal, but Dave McNeily & Daniel Jackson beat
Scott & Lake 4640-2470 to ensure the
Sandwich side could not lose.  Jackson was in inspired form again as he and Beadle scored 3630 in the final frame to grab the match win and the bonus points.
