In Group A, the Plough & Harrow from Bridge drew 3-3 at the Lion to ensure a
place in the final. The Lion needed a high-scoring 5-1 victory to pip the
Plough, but the match was effectively over after the first two frames. The
crucial first leg saw Wack Sampson open with 2000, and Keith Symes reply during
the game with a couple of 2000 breaks of his own. Sampson got to almost an
1800 break approaching the end but left missed the one-up, from where Symes
pounced on the 50 hole to eventually win 4920-3770. Paddy Maher then beat
Neville Potts 4340-2910 to make it 2-0 to the Plough and secure the final place.
Tim Hayes defeated Ian Dennett 6600-2290 in the final singles, and then
partnered Potts to take the first doubles and level matters. After Potts
& Matt Andrews took the Lion's third successive point it looked like the
consolation of match victory was possible, but Keith & Baz Symes had other
ideas as they rattled 6580 points to force the draw.
The Market Inn defeated the Magnet B 4-2 in the other Group A match.
Craig Carlson got the Market off to a winning start, but Rob Robertson
won his game for 1-1. Gareth Butcher won a close singles against Steve
Philpott 2530-2330 to regain the Market lead. Carlson & Alan Farra
took the first doubles, and then Farra & Butcher made it 4-1 before
Robertson & Tanya Philpott won the final frame for the visitors.
In Group B, the
The Brickmakers B ended a decent campaign with a 4-2 win at the Plough &
Harrow Tilmanstone. Wins for Simon Jones (4540) and Paul Dargan (1400)
shot the Brickies ahead, but Ann Keen (2510) salvaged a singles point for the
Plough. Dargan & Jones combined for a win in the first doubles, before
Simon Hart & Dargan clinched the match victory with a 2690-2260 win over
Karen Keen & Ann Keen. A score of 4040 for Ann Keen & Brian
Carpenter secured a second point for the Plough in the final leg.
A 4-2 win for the Brickmakers A was unable to prevent the Fitzwalter Arms from
securing the Plate title. Nigel Scott took the first leg for the Fitz,
before Craig Lancaster levelled matters.
