Report 1st November 2003

Firstly, a quick mention about the Jersey “World Bar Billiards Championships” which took place last weekend.  It was largely disappointing for our players, as not one progressed beyond round two.  Indeed, not a single player from the whole of Kent got past that stage.  However, there was one noteworthy performance.  All first round losers in the main competition play in the Plate, and Mike Callanan, who plays for the Magnet in Deal, reached the quarter-finals of that competition and was later awarded the “most meritorious performance” trophy.  His wins en route included one against Paul Wing from Sussex, one the country's top ranked players, and he eventually lost to Mark James, also from Sussex, another leading player.

The Royal Oak have moved to the top after a 4-2 against fellow high-flyers the Market Inn A.  Alan Smith (5470) and Richard Cousens (1600) put the Oak 2-0 up, but Alan Farra maintained his 100% record as he scored 5130 to pull a point back.  The first two doubles rolled the
Royal Oak way as first Stuart Richardson & Smith and then Smith & Cousens took their legs.  The final frame saw Gareth Butcher & Dave Carliell beat Cousens & Richardson 3920-2540 for the Sandwich side.

The Chantry Club have awakened, as they travelled to Goodnestone and came away 5-1 winners against the Fitzwalter Arms A.  Mark Graves (2350) put the Fitz ahead, but it was downhill from there for the home side.  Mick Nichol (4810) and John Fullager (5410) took the remaining singles, before a close doubles was won 4550-3370 by Nichol & Roger Standen against Alan Patfield & Roger Oldfield.  Fullager & Nichol (6490) wrapped up the match victory, and the final doubles was the closest as Standen & Fullager beat Graves & Patfield 3300-2910.

The Magnet A sent the Market Inn B crashing to another defeat, this time 4-2 in Sandwich .  John Higgens edged Derek Latham 2580-2030 to put the Magnet ahead, and Mike Callanan extended their lead with an 8410 score, including a 5360 opening break.  John Skinner won a nervy frame 1630-1370 against Ward Griffiths to put the Sandwich side back in it.  The Magnet enjoyed the best of the play in the doubles as Mike & Lin Callanan (5050) and John Higgens & Mike Callanan (5910) won comfortably.  A further consolation point came for the Market in the final doubles as Derek Latham & Craig Carlson were winners.

The Plough & Harrow from Tilmanstone beat the Magnet B 4-2 in Deal to stay at the top of division two.  Steve Philpott (2450) put the Magnet ahead, and Rob Robertson beat Karen Keen 1630-1270 to put the Plough 2-0 up.  The Plough staged a “Wolves” from there as Brian Carpenter (3070) took the final singles, and then all three doubles fell to them, including a final frame 3370-2360 for Karen Keen & Ann Keen over Steve Philpott & Rob Robertson.

The Alma have narrowed the Plough lead to one point after a 5-1 win at home to the Greyhound from Sandwich .  Bill Edwards (6770) powered the Alma ahead, before Daniel Jackson kept his 100% record going with a 2870 score to pull the Greyhound level.  Dave Howarth (2760) put the Alma back in front in the final singles.  John Mitchell & Bill Edwards accumulated another 6290 to take the first doubles, but Harry Pearson & Mitchell were fortunate to take the next frame with a 2300 score, after Jim Jackson unluckily black-pegged when he and Daniel Jackson were on 3000.  Howarth & Pearson took the final frame for the 5-1 win.

The Brickmakers B won 4-2 in Ashley against the Butchers Arms to remain in third place.  Simon Hart beat Ruth Collins 3260-2010 to give the Brickies the lead, but Paul Collins enjoyed a 2410-1150 triumph against Simon Jones to level matters.  Nick Corck (3390) restored the Brickies lead, and the Jones & Paul Dargan extended their lead in the first doubles.   After the two Simons scored 3990 the match was beyond doubt, but Darryl Pemble & Doug Vickers scored 3280 to take the final frame for the Butchers Arms.

Finally, the Brickmakers A enjoyed their first win of the season, 4-2 at home to the Fitzwalter Arms B.  Ann Garlinge (2230) put the Brickies ahead, before Nigel Scott (2850) levelled the tie.  Paul Garlinge (2900) restored the Deal team’s lead in the final singles.  Ann Garlinge & Craig Lancaster took the first doubles, and the bonus points were secured as Paul & Ann Garlinge defeated Nigel Scott & Lee Byford 3380-2000.  The Fitz second point came in the final frame as Carl Byford & Nigel Scott won.
