Report 11th November 2002
The Alma A played the Greyhound B on Sunday this
week in a rearranged fixture, and took advantage of the early start with
a 5-1 victory which moves them to within a point of leaders the Plough &
Harrow from Bridge. At the time of writing, the Plough were resting with
a bye, whereas third placed Chantry faced a potentially tricky match at the
Lion at Ash. A win would see there would see the Chantry top the table.
The Alma vs. Greyhound match started with a win
for Tim Bourner against Daniel Jackson. Tim built an early lead by
mounting a score total of over 4000, and through most of the game Daniel was
unable to find his scoring touch. However, with about 5 minutes
remaining, Daniel got the break back, and with his break standing at 3600 a
ball whipped back from the 30 hole and knocked over the white peg, thereby
losing a score which would have virtually levelled the frame. The second
game was won by Ted Batchelor 4850-3890 against Derek Latham. In this
frame, Derek built the early lead and led by a thousand approaching the bar.
Ted however gained the break and built enough to take the frame. The
third game started scrappily between Chris Saville and Craig Carlson before
Chris ran up a break of 6500 on the way to a comprehensive win, and a 3-0 lead
for the Alma after the singles matches. The doubles continued in similar
fashion as Chris & Gill Saville teamed up to beat Derek Latham and Daniel
Jackson 5960-1910. The second doubles leg saw the only point for the
Greyhound as Craig Carlson and Derek Latham teamed up to beat Tim Bourner and
John Mitchell 4800-3630, a hard earned point helped by a maximum 2000 break
from Derek. Ted Batchelor and John Mitchell easily won the final game.
John is one a ten players from this league heading to Jersey on Tuesday to
compete in the annual Open held there, and will be hoping for a repeat of last
year when he reached the quarter finals.
