Report 16th December 2002

The Alma A won at home to the Magnet A 4-2 to maintain the pressure on the Chantry at the top.  The first leg went to the Alma as Tim Bourner recorded the highest individual score this season, 15030, courtesy of breaks of 6900 and 7000.  John Higgens enjoyed a superb win over Chris Saville 5380-4390 to level the tie.  John opened with 1k, and added to that a break of 4k.  Chris found himself trailing by 5000 with 5 minutes remaining and got the break back, but without enough time remaining to catch up.  The third leg went to the Magnet as Mike Callanan beat Ted Batchelor 7120-2320.  Ted had opened on a 2000 break and led the early stages, but Mike got the break back and played out the table for 6000 to take the game.  All three doubles went to the Alma for the 4-2 win, as both John Mitchell and Tim Bourner played two doubles apiece and responded with maximum 2000 breaks in both their legs.
A good win for the Plough & Harrow from Bridge as they beat strugglers Greyhound B 6-0 at home.  The first two legs went to Paddy Meher (4230) and Keith Symes (5820), and the third was a seesaw game as Ian Dennett defeated Craig Carlson 4480-3620.  The doubles were all straightforward for the Plough, including the final leg in which Keith Symes and Baz Symes scored 8790.  The Plough have now overtaken the Chantry at the top.
Another good win for the Lion, this time 4-2 at the
Royal Oak , keeps them just off the pace. The Royal Oak shot into the lead taking the first two singles with victories for Gary Clarke (5950) and Alan Smith (3680).  >From here the Lion took control and all the remaining games with a singles win for Wack Sampson (5050), followed by wins in all the doubles.  The final two legs were close, leg five was 4190-3510 for Tim Hayes and Terry Laslett, leg six 4730-4030 for Nev Potts & Tim Hayes against Stuart Richardson and Richard Cousens.

In division two, the Greyhound A, playing at home, enjoyed a key victory against second placed Fitzwalter Arms 4-2.  Gareth Butcher (3810) took the first leg, followed by Alan Farra (4990) as the greyhound built a 2-0 lead.  The third leg saw an excellent win for Dave Carliell over Roger Oldfield 3220-2710.  Dave had been trailing approaching the bar, but got the break back and recorded a 1700 break to snatch victory and the 3-0 lead.  The visitors staged a comeback in the first two doubles -
Steve Lake and Roger Oldfield took the first, followed by Roger Oldfield and Mark Graves with a score of 5130 to take the match to 3-2.  The final leg was fittingly close as Christine Farra and Alan Farra beat Mark Graves and Steve Lake narrowly 3660-3210, thereby taking the Greyhound to the verge of promotion.
The Plough & Harrow from Tilmanstone are third after a close 4-2 victory at home to the Butchers Arms.  The Plough took the early lead after Ann Keen won, but the Butchers Arms responded by taking the next two singles and a 2-1 lead after wins for Paul Collins and Doug Vickers.  The doubles however saw the Plough regain the initiative and take all three
for the match win.
The Brickmakers B and the Alma B shared the spoils with a 3-3 draw in their mid-table clash.  Dave Carter took the first leg for the Brickies before Bill Edwards (4350) levelled the tie.  From here the Brickies forged ahead with a 4880-2260 win for Simon Jones over Rick Cowdrey,
followed by doubles success for Paul Dargan & Simon Jones.  The
Alma fought back in the next doubles with Dave Howarth and Shirley Cowdrey recording a win.  A close final leg saw the Alma level the match with a 4430-3390 win for Shirley Cowdrey & Bill Edwards over Simon Jones and Simon Hart.

Finally, the Magnet B beat the Brickmakers A at home 4-2.  The first leg saw an excellent win for Tanya Philpott over Nick Corck, which included a break of 1640 to win.  A close win for Paul Garlinge 3260-2740 against Chris Gent levelled matters before Rob Robertson restored the home side’s lead.  Craig Lancaster & Ann Garlinge won their doubles leg to again pull the match level, but the Magnet took the final two doubles for the victory.
