Division 1

Alma ‘A’ maintained their position at the top of the table with a good 5-1 win against the Lion from Ash. All their single leg players, Ted Batchelor, John Mitchell and Chris Saville made good scores with the best of the bunch 9820 from Saville

Top scorer of the week is Stan Brocklebank with his best for a number of seasons; 11270 in his leg for the Chantry ‘B’ side as they entertained the Royal Oak, although his team mate Chris Cook was just 110 points from the magical 10000. The visitors were unlucky to end the evening without any points as the doubles with Stuart Richardson and Alan Smith were just 60 behind their opponents in the last leg of the evening.

Keith Symes was the only player from Bridge’s Plough&Harrow side to get a leg win in their match with the Chantry ‘A’, although both Ian Dennett and Paddy Maher came very close, losing with very tight scores.

Deals Brickmakers Arms had a fine win against fellow Dealites Alma ‘B’, lifting them to second place in the division. Nick Corck marked his return to league bar billiards with victory over Dave Howarth, although Howarth was involved in his sides only leg win of the evening, partnering Ann Cope in the clash with Alan Garlinge and skipper Paul Garlinge.

Fitzwalter Arms chalked up their first victory since returning to the league, and a very good win at that. Away to Oak&Ivy ‘A’, they took the first four legs of the match thanks to Mark Graves, Roger Oldfield, Steve Lake and the pairing of Nigel Scott/Oldfield. The home side won the next with a comfortable margin but the guests rounded off the evening by taking the last.

Its rare that a leg ends up exactly even on points, with each side earning half a point each. We probably average one a season. For the Oak & Ivy ‘B’ side to have this happen in three consecutive matches surely must be unique! Jeb Lawson and Brian Hambrook were the latest ‘culprits’ in their match against Ann and Ken Keen for the Plough&Harrow in Tilmanstone. After both sides had a black peg, they managed to pot the last ball of the night into the 100 hole for the draw, and possibly the League records book.
